Passion. Data. And a little Nerdiness

My name is Jonathan Law, and I'm a 4th year Data Science student at Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. With a background in Computer Science, a strong base in statistics, and a passion for data, I look for the opportunity to measure, analyze, and improve processes in business and in my own personal life.

I love writing code, I love doing statistical analyses, and I love data. Whether I am using data to make predictions and forecast performance or to optimize my own weight loss, collecting and examining data is something that I enjoy and often do for fun.

Being in one of the only undergraduate Data Science majors has been a blessing to me. I've sharpened and expanded my coding skills and learned to think about data and information technology in new ways. I've learned statistical and explorative analysis techniques, Machine Learning concepts and practices, rules for information visualization, and how to analyze and improve information systems. I'm continuing to learn and to build my knowledge base, and I look forward to being able to apply my knowledge in the real world very soon!

Areas of Experience

PROGRAMMING

My main expertise is in Python, a scripting language and one of the most popular in the world (with good reason!). I also have a lot of experience with SQL and I'm currently learning R.

DATA VISUALIZATION

Data can often be an impenetrable black box. Using a variety of data visualization tools and libraries, I can create stunning graphics that help give you a full and transparent understanding of your data. The Matplotlib library in Python and the visualization tool Tableau are my main areas of expertise.

DATA ANALYSIS AND STATISTICS

Experience with data analysis and statistics are the major difference between a data scientist and just another developer. I have a firm background in statistics and the experience required to use those techniques to yield insights from a data set.

SYSTEMS Thinking

Thinking in systems is sometimes the best way to break free from a repetitive, linear mindset, and it often models real world conditions more accurately than simple cause and effect. Being aware of the many different moving parts in a company is essential in order to make good decisions.

MACHINE LEARNING

Machine learning is the next frontier, both in the tech industry and in my own education! I have a bit of experience with algorithms like K-Nearest Neighbors and Naive Bayes classification, but I look forward to expanding my knowledge to more advanced ML techniques.

BUSINESS ANALYTICS

My manager at my first job liked to quote Peter Drucker: "If you don't measure it, you can't improve it." This quote really stuck with me, and as a data scientist, the mindset it provides is crucial. Applying the data-centered tools in a business environment, to analyze customer preferences and sales trends, to streamline processes, and to find ways in which a business can function optimally is my true goal in any project I take on.
